UAE Pavilion: Expo 2012, Yeosu
A large-scale looping video projection for the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea, blending real UAE footage with illustrated sections inspired by South Korea's own illustration tradition.
The Brief
Expo 2012 opened in the port city of Yeosu, South Korea, on 12 May 2012, expected to draw around 8 million visitors over its 3-month run under the theme "The Living Ocean and Coast". Like most world's fairs, the international participants occupied the largest area of the site, including a huge overhead video screen running the length of the International Participants Pavilion's central axis. Cumi worked with Big Features on a large projection to run on a loop in the UAE's own Pavilion there.
What Cumi Created
To tackle the job, Cumi worked with a large array of real footage shot in the UAE, alongside a number of designed and animated sections drawing on South Korea's own strong tradition of illustration. Cumi also worked with director Robert Butcher at Big Features to design the physical screens the finished film would be projected onto.
The Film
A loop, a pavilion, two traditions of image-making.
